Opening Assignment pg 443 Find the definition of energy in your textbook….and put it in your notebook. There are two parts to this definition!

What is Energy? We talk about energy all the time! Should we buy energy-efficient windows? The country needs an energy policy Those kids have a lot of energy Candy will give you an energy boost Close the refrigerator, you’re wasting energy!

We use the word energy a lot, but can you explain to someone what energy really is??? Can you hold energy in your hands?

1. Roll a marble across the floor 1. Roll a marble across the floor. Does this marble have energy while it is rolling?

3. Clap your hands. Any energy present when you do that?

5. Stretched Rubber band Hold an unstretched rubber band. Now stretch the rubber band. any energy now?

6. Magnets Place magnets next to each other so they stick together. Pull them apart and then let them go. Do the magnets have energy?

7. Ball on the table Pick up a ball and put it on a table. Push it off the table so it falls to the floor. (8. falling ball!) In which of these situations did the ball have energy?

9. Hold an unlit match. Does the match have energy?

10. Strike the match Any energy now? How do you know?

11. Battery Does it have energy? How do you know?

12. Does the sun have energy?

How many of these examples/situations had ENERGY?

Everything had energy!

Kinetic Energy Anything that is moving! Think of it as working energy!

Another Type of Energy Potential Energy Chances are you said that the stretched rubber band has energy. Why?

Potential Energy Two magnets when pulled apart have energy….. You know this because they jump back together.

Potential Energy Something or a group of things have energy because of its position or its shape. ……ability to do something (work!!!…..) Textbook Definition: Stored energy because of its position/shape.
