Outcomes All to know threats faced by the Weimar republic from within the political system Most to see how this would weaken the Weimar Republic Some to be able to see how this would lead to problems later in Germany

Threats from within The army Why is the army important? The judicary The legal system in Germany Economic crisis Reparations and hyper inflation

Judicary - Drawn from the pre war government and their sympathies lay with the old regime -under article 54 they maintained their independence which they would use to undermine the constitution as many judges would show bias against the old republic -Find an example of bias and failure

The army Although the army fought against the left and the right more importantly it was protecting its own interests It has no allegence to the state it was supposed to protect Write 2 examples of the army fighting threats to the state

Reparations Between 1919-21 there were 23 conferences were held to discuss the levels of reparations It was settled on 266 milliard marks ( a milliard is a thousand million ) The amount of marks to be repayed fluatated over the years until 1923 and eventually Germanys debt increased 469 milliard marks What did this lead to?

What did this lead to? The Ruhr Crisis 1923 Germany defaulted on its reparations the French and Belgians sent 60 000 troops into the industrial heartland of Germany- the Ruhr The govt asked workers to offer passive resistance but the French and Belgians arrested mine owners and took over railways The lack of taxes from this area was a reason why the govt printed more currency leading to hyperinflation As currency collapsed so did the resistance and eventually faith in the new republic

Good times ahead However In 1923 Gustav Stresseman took over the government In Sept 1923 the Germans started paying back reparations and the French set up a board to look into the problems of the Germany economy In Nov 1923 the Retenmark was created and its printed strictly controlled. 700 000 government workers were sacked to help the economy Also a Retenbank was opened to oversee the introduction of the Retenmark, which became the Reichsmark in 1923
