Presentation transcript:

Christopher Nelson Economics Final Presentation - 2015 Mr. __________ Topic: Affirmative Action Research Question: “In what ways are affirmative action policies helpful or harmful to college and job opportunities?” *This is a template, or guideline, for you to follow. Your presentation should be formatted like this one in terms of the basic elements contained within it – feel free to add more or deviate from the design, however.

What is Affirmative Action? Policies used by universities and in the business world that grant quotas (a minimum number) for minority students/employees. So, a school that has an all white population may have a quota of 5% non-white students.

Why is this controversial? When there is a choice between an equally qualified white and minority applicant, the minority would be given preference in order to meet a quota. Discussion Question 1: What is your opinion of affirmative action, based on the definitions just offered? Explain why you think it’s fair or unfair.

Race-based Affirmative Action Is Still Needed – New York Times This article discusses the need for affirmative action in American society, whether it is fair or not (INSERT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ARTICLE HERE. Discussion Question 2: If affirmative action isn’t ‘fair’, then why do you think many colleges/businesses used the practice to begin with? What was the need for it in American scoiety? Source 1: http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2014/04/27/should-affirmative-action-be-based-on-income/race-based-affirmative-action-is-still-needed

Where does this take place?

How does this relate to class? Trade-Offs – universities or companies must make a trade of between different employees, potentially on the basis of race/ethnicity/or gender Discrimination – many people think that this practice is discriminatory in that it gives preference to one group over another, based only on race/ethnicity/or gender Discussion Question 3 – IF you were a business owner, to what extent would you be for or against this hiring practice at your business? Why?

Discussion Discussion question 4: Looking at the other side of the argument, if you were given preference to the job/college of your choice due to affirmative action policies, how you would you feel? Discussion question 5: Do you think that affirmative action should apply to some ethnicities/groups more than others? Which ones? Why or why not?

Summary: Affirmative action is ________________. This relates to class in terms of __________ and _____________. Based on what I’ve researched, my opinion of the practice is ______________________.
