5.4 Subtracting Polynomials
- To subtract an integer without tiles, we add the opposite integers. The ‘Additive Inverse’ So we distribute the negative sign to the terms inside the 2nd bracket. - + +
Or we can combine like terms and then add…
Using algebra tiles: (3b2 – 2b – 1) – (-2b2 – b + 2) To subtract, you have to take away 2 , 1 , and 2 . Because these tiles aren’t there to take away, you add zero pairs.
Now take away the tiles for (-2b2 – b + 2) The remaining tiles represent : 5b2 – b - 3
Try these: 1) Symbolically (Using numbers and letters) a. (8f – 3) – (7f+5) b. (2 + 5g – 7g2) – (9g – 4g2 + 2) 2) With algebra tiles (-4v2 + 5v - 1) – (-3v2 + 4v – 2)
