Scientific Question What type of candy flows like liquid?

Background I chose this project because I never thought candy could flow like a liquid. I found this on science buddies and I thought it would be a fun project.

Hypothesis My hypothesis is I think that solids can flow like liquid. If I use M&M’s Then it will flow like a liquid.

Variables Independent: Solids vs. Liquids Dependent: How well it flows Constants: Amount of candy, temp of room, height of waterfall

Procedure Get a funnel Cut a circle hole in cardboard Prepare a table in a notebook Use a ruler to measure both large and small dimensions of a simple grain of each material Measure 250 grams of each material Pour material, make sure none are leaking out at bottom Get a stopwatch and time as it goes through Write down the time it took Calculate the mass flow rate (mass flow rate =mass divided by time)

Conclusion What type of candy can flow like liquid? Poured candy into funnel. Skittles had the lowest time going through the funnel. My hypothesis was wrong because I thought M&M’s would flow like a liquid and have the lowest time going through the funnel but Skittles had the lowest time and flowed like a liquid. Some candy can flow like a liquid waterfall and some don't. I had the wrong size funnel and we had to go get a bigger one and we also had to help the candy go through the bottom of the funnel because it would get stuck (it was mostly the gobstoppers). I also had to restart pouring it in the funnel and getting it to go through the funnel.
