ABC AFTER SCHOOL* THEORY OF ACTION The Challenge We Address Emerging careers in the STEM fields are growing and evolving, yet the workforce lacks diversity and some groups remain underrepresented. Youth from underrepresented communities have limited access to opportunities and resources to explore STEM, career, and college options. ABC After School creates opportunities for youth to explore hands-on STEM and college access activities, and builds life-long skills to explore college and career pathways. ABC After School is designed for students in upper elementary and secondary grades from underrepresented communities in one place and select satellite locations in another place. If our students have access to… Hands-on project-based learning offered in session-based programs Multiple opportunities to participate throughout the year Exploration in STEM fields, career, and college pathways A positive and supportive learning environment that helps build life-long skills Access and opportunity to use resources, such as technology, equipment, and people Opportunities to practice 21st Century skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking Then our students will experience… Increased self-confidence Increased awareness of their passions Increased knowledge and interest about STEM careers Increased awareness of college and career pathways Increased self-advocacy and ability to ask for what they need Ability to make connections between content and careers And will ultimately… Be able to form positive relationships with mentors and role models Have the skills and resources to make decisions based on their passions Be more persistent and better able to navigate challenging systems and situations Be more likely to pursue STEM majors in college and STEM careers in the future Have a positive outlook for their future.
