Semantic Knowledge Store Tim Martin SPAWARSYSCEN, San Diego, CA An Implementation of a Semantic Knowledge Store (SKS) This is the approved template for use for all internal SPAWAR briefings. Make sure to delete the round logo place holder on the cover and on the master slide before or after inserting your program’s logo. Note: the specific logo inserted should be for the specific program being discussed. If you need to continue a section onto additional slides, add “(Continued)” on the second line of the title in 24font. Use Arial fonts. Bold text is recommended Try to use font sizes of 24 point or larger Avoid fine lines -- they tend to disappear Use moderately contrasting text & background Light text on a dark background works only if the text is large and the bold Avoid complicated or multicolored shaded backgrounds Dr. David J. Roberts Joseph Mango John Bresnik Tim Martin SPAWARSYSCEN, San Diego, CA DIST A:  Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited (2 September 2004) 2004 Semantic Technologies for e-Government Conference 8-9 September 2004

One Definition of Efficiency… This is the fire house that twice failed to save the town, once in 1892 and again in 1932. Both times the fire mains were clogged (no maintenance) and the frustrated townsfolk watched major portions of the town burn down. In a monument to government efficiency, both times the fire house was saved. Bodie, California

Purpose of Research… Provide an architectural framework for fielding new data management, correlation and visualization tools Integrate emerging semantic technologies into the Navy’s net-centric warfare operations construct Implement semantic-driven knowledge acquisition and discovery capabilities through present tactical data management services

Goals and Objectives… Perform inferencing over bounded spatial, temporal and abstract properties Represent uncertainty in the accumulated knowledge base Create dynamic associations of data, “On Demand Schema” (ODS) within the network centric warfare operational environment “on the fly”

Technology Gaps Addressed… The dynamic, rapid “on the fly” knowledge acquisition and discovery services essential to supporting the ongoing mission of the warfighter

Technical Concept… Information discovery in multiple dimensions of interest, in temporal and spatial domains, in a dynamic environment Temporal Spatial

Underlying Database… Triple Store Table (subject, predicate, object) On Demand Schema (ODS) Table Note: There must be a rule in the ODS before a triple may be stored

The Implementation… 2,500 news feeds converted into triples and stored RDFS vocabulary defined in the El Centro Core (Appendix A of the paper) This was the first production use of the Semantic Knowledge Store (SKS) Minor discrepancies will be worked out for a full up Ontology Web Language (OWL) implementation

The Implementation… With the implementation problems were seen, such as the need for a “Self Tuner” to: Reduce duplicate information Delay the indexing of a feed Display the most recent information Note: A vocabulary for a Self Tuner was added the El Centro Core v 0.1 (see paper Appendix)

Conclusions… The dynamic, rapid “on the fly” knowledge acquisition and discovery services are essential to supporting the ongoing mission of the modern warfighter Prior to semantic technologies, managing schema complexity within dynamic context, offered few viable solutions
