The essay: reason/logic/facts/claims & evidence

LOGOS We’ve already reviewed a logical appeal, one that works to elicit people’s understanding of facts, statistics, logic. Such an approach is more objective and works to prove a claim through reason rather than emotion.

PRACTICE Read the “parking letter” and work to: Identify the claim/purpose of the letter Highlight and paraphrase reasons/support for the writer’s claim/purpose

REASONING with ARGUMENT When you read a piece that makes a claim, look for: How a writer provides reasons/support How a writer may anticipate the counterclaim (the opposing viewpoint) How a writer refutes the counterclaim/how the writer takes down the points of the opposition How a writer makes a concession (acknowledges the other side’s point)—see next slide for example

CONCESSION The writer acknowledges that, yes, she broke a rule: she isn’t supposed to park in Lot E. Note that she follows that up with “but;” she is looking to make a case that she had a valid reason to break that rule.

Read the “Bag Ban” piece and follow the directions on the essay. PRACTICE: Read the “Bag Ban” piece and follow the directions on the essay.
