Sectional Compromises When Slavery became an issue

Brief History of Slavery….. B side 1789-Constitution is ratified; Three-Fifths Compromise recognizes slavery as a legal institution. *Slave trade is to be abolished in 20 years *Southern states are considering abolition; plantation agriculture is proving unprofitable as tobacco and cotton wears out the land

Slavery Cont….. 1793-Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin, making short-staple cotton a profitable crop. 1808-The African slave trade is legally abolished; actually continues illegally up to the Civil War. 1819---American Colonization Society founded to “return” freed slaves to Africa (Liberia)

(This happens in the North!) *Nat Turner's rebellion, killing 60 whites, terrorizes the South. *A proposal to end slavery in Virginia is dropped by the Virginia State Legislature
