The working group or research group proposing the use of the technology with respect to which the proprietary rights are claimed may assist the OGF secretariat in this effort. The results of this procedure shall not affect advancement of document, except that the GFSG may defer approval where a delay may facilitate the obtaining of such assurances. The results will, however, be recorded by the OGF Secretariat, and made available. Interoperability Motivation (1) More variety of resources Access to a broader variety of resources E.g. convenient usage of different types of resources (HPC / HTC resources) in mutliple infrastructures Consider a larger range of scales, many different HPC machines! Extending the functionality Smart way of extending the functionality of one infrastructure E.g. brokering mechanism in HTC vs. explicit choose of computing resources in HPC Enhanced Resource Utilization Better load-balancing between different kind of computing infrastructures and their resources Combine resources of different infrastructures for more realistic simulations 6

Interoperability Motivation (2) Economic Considerations Economic way of synergetic development avoids duplicate technology development Save computational time on rare and costly HPC resources, E.g. perform smaller evaluation jobs on HTC infrastructures before going to ‘full-blown’ production runs on HPC infrastructures with large-scale resources After full-blown HPC production runs – scientists are able to run directly in turn HTC evaluation jobs Reduce the overal data size to be stored on storage systems (Future: Storage might becomes more expensive than flop/s) 7

Basic Use Case – Part 1 WISDOM, VPH & other use cases have similiar approach Basic use case identified in production Grids is as follows: On behalf of an authorized user, … … a tool interrogates the information system (representing a grid or a single resource), locates an optimal execution resource,… … submits the job to the execution resource, … … which in turn interprets the submitted job description… … and locates and fetches the necessary input data … from a remote storage - … … also on behalf of the user. Summary Production Grid Infrastructure Interoperation Many use cases that point to open problems / missing links The WISDOM Use Case Work towards the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) Basic use case is already supported by many open standards, but not working directly together Missing links between various specifications, tunings necessary Refinements necessary for joint use of vertical plumbings (i.e. security/information) with horizontal services (BES, SRM,…) Infrastructure Interoperability Reference Model Initial input from GIN production experience and use cases Work in progress for PGI working group Benefits Effective use of both HTC and HPC application chains accross multiple existing infrastructures Support of multi-scale and mulit-physics applications 22
