Symbiosis
Symbiosis Symbiosis describes a close, long lasting relationship between two different types of organisms.
Three types of Symbiotic Relationships Parasitism Commensalism Mutualism
Parasitism One organism, called the parasite, benefits from living off the body of another organism the host. Ex. A hookworm takes blood and nutrients from its host and while it benefits the host is harmed.
Commensalism One organism benefits and the other is not affected. Ex. An elf owl makes its nest in a hole in a cactus. The owl benefits, and the cactus is not affected.
Mutualism Both organisms benefit. EX. Cleaner shrimp eat parasites attached to fish. Both the shrimp and the fish benefit from this relationship.
