What about Poems? 1. There is always one right way to interpret a poem. 2. When reading a poem, you have to figure out what the author meant. 3. Poems are more difficult to read than stories. 4. Most people find it easy to write poems.

My Papa’s Waltz What is a waltz? Read this poem to yourself a few times. Annotate your text. Underline the lines you have questions about, and write your questions next to those lines.

My Papa’s Waltz Next, pick out what you consider as the most important line. Copy that line on the bottom of the paper. Write a paragraph about why it is the most important line.

My Papa’s Waltz You will now move into groups of 2-3 Share your questions. Read your chosen lines and paragraphs to each other and to talk about the similarities and differences in the way they read or interpreted the poem. Answer this question on the bottom of the poem: What is the poem about? Use text evidence to support your ideas.

My Papa’s Waltz Whole group share out Use evidence from the poem to support your ideas.

Which Interpretation is the Right one? Interpretations change Interpretations can be vaild within a range No absolute “right” answers Flip the poem over on the back- read the paragraph from another poet, TS Elliot, as he explains this. Write your response.
