The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet Seven Focus Themes/Globe Theater Get ready! Lots of writing, lots of discussing, lots of LEARNING! 

Today’s Learning Objective(s) We will begin by exploring various themes found in one of William Shakespeare’s finest works. We will briefly contrast Shakespeare’s GLOBE theater with our theater today. Finally, we will define essential terminology using our textbooks and a creative vocabulary activity.

How to Organize these Themes Each slide will have a shortened “theme title” at the top with a specified question beneath. Number and write each question. DO NOT answer the questions YET.

1. Parental Approval: If my parents didn’t approve of a boy or girl I was interested in, would that stop me from seeing him or her?

2. An Honorable Death? Why is suicide sometimes viewed as the most selfish act one could commit? Under what circumstances can suicide be an honorable way to die?

3. True Love Can teenagers experience “true love?” Do teenagers MEAN it when/if they say, “I love you” to a boy or girl they are dating?

4. Marriage Cultures that include “arranged marriages” often have lower divorce rates. Why? What qualities/virtues/characteristics are NECESSARY in a significant other for me to consider marriage with that person?

5. Love v. Lust Do I HAVE to be physically attracted to someone BEFORE feeling “true love?” Can “true love” exist WITHOUT physical attraction?

6. Love, Hate, and REVENGE Which emotion is most powerful in causing a person to take ACTION: LOVE or HATE

7. Superstitions Do I believe in horoscopes and/or astrology? Do I believe in FATE or COINCIDENCE?

Draw a dark line beneath the 7th theme William Shakespeare’s theater is GREATLY different than “our theater today!” Record the following brief details about his theater!

The Globe Theater- 1599-1613 Day time performances Could hold 1,500 (often filled with over 3,000) Royalty rarely attended- mostly nobility & lower class (“groundlings”) Paid penny in a box at entrance = today’s “box office” Special effects (blood, music, fireworks, cannons) PLENTY MORE TO COME WITH THE INTRODUCTION VIDEO “The Heavens” = false ceiling “The Lord’s Room” = obstructed views, most expensive! “Hell” = trapdoors (3 total) “Theater Yard” = standing area, violence! Gambling, fights, drinking (no toilets in the theater), theft, fruit sellers “Tiring House” = actors change their “attire”
