Standards in the Education Sector Content Standards Performance Standards Data Standards Interoperability Standards

Content Standards Definition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities students are expected to develop State specific Common Core

Performance Standards Level at which students are expected to develop mastery of content standards State-developed summative assessments are one tool used to measure achievement of performance standards Consortia developed assessment programs will be used to measure achievement of Common Core standards

Data Standards Data Standards are documented agreements on representations, formats, and definitions of common data. Data standards improve the quality and share-ability of data by: – Increasing data compatibility – Improving the consistency and efficiency of data collection – Reducing data redundancy

Data Standards Variable Names Expected values/content type Example: – Topic: Gender – Variable Name: Gen – Value: 0 = Female, 1=Male

Data Standard Applied Topic: Gender Database 1 : – Variable Name: Gender – Value: M = Male, F = Female Database 2 : – Variable Name: Sex – Value: 1=Male, 2=Female Export Conversion – DB 1: Gender = Gen, M=0, F=1 – DB 2: Sex = Gen, 1=0, 2=1 Import Conversion – DB 1: Gen = Gender, 0=M, 1=F – DB 2: Gen = Sex, 0=1, 1=2

Interoperability Standards Interoperability is a property referring to the ability of diverse systems and organizations to work together (inter-operate). Interoperability is a property of a product or system, whose interfaces are completely understood, to work with other products or systems, present or future, without any restricted access or implementation. Interoperability is the ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort on the part of the customer.

Interoperability Standards Products achieve interoperability with other products using either or both of two approaches: – By adhering to published interface standards – By making use of a "broker" of services that can convert one product's interface into another product's interface "on the fly"

Interoperable Assessments Require Commonly Understood: – File format for item content – Codes/tags for item content – Representation of and interactions with content – Scoring rules

Interoperability & Data Standards for Assessment Interoperability standards required for: – Item content file format, presentation of that content, interactions with the content, and scoring of responses Data Standards required for: – Information about items (e.g., what they measure, parameters) – Information about students (e.g., identification, demographics, access needs) – Recording results
