Multiplication Find 39 x 6 Mental Strategies without a calculator Find 30 x 6 and 9 x 6 then add two answers together 30 x 6 = 180, 9 x 6= 54, 180 + 54 = 234

Multiplication Find 42 x 34 Written strategy without a calculator Add altogether 1200 + 160 + 60 + 8 =1428 40 2 30 0 60 4 160 8

Percentages 1% 5% 10% 20% 25% 𝟑𝟑 𝟏 𝟑 % 50% 100% 𝟏 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟏 𝟐𝟎 𝟏 𝟏𝟎 𝟏 𝟓 𝟏 𝟒 𝟏 𝟑 𝟏 𝟐 1 Method 1 Find 20% of £80 80 x 1 5 80 ÷5=£16 Method 2 Find 20% of £80 10% = 80 ÷10 = £8 20% = 2 x 8 = £16

Harder Percentages Calculator Method Non-calculator Method 19% of £60 e.g 17.5% of £300 = 19 100 x 60 10% 300 ÷10 =30 5% 30 ÷2 =15 = 0.19 x 60 2.5% 15 ÷2 =7.5 = £11.40 17.5% =£52.50

Simplifying Fractions We can sometimes simplify a fraction by finding a highest common factor (a number that fits exactly in and is the highest out them all) 3 12 = 1 4 10 15 = 2 3 ÷3 ÷5 ÷5 ÷3

Rounding 347.6 348 ( to the nearest whole number) 350 ( to the nearest ten) 300 (to the nearest hundred) 323.7415 323.74 ( to 2 decimal places) 323.741 (to 3 decimal places) When rounding to 2 decimal places if the 3rd number after the decimal point is 5 or above you round up to the next number. If it is below 5 you keep the 2nd number after the decimal point the same!

Measure Length Weight Volume 10mm 1cm 1000mg 1g 1000ml 1litre 100cm 1metre 1000g 1kg 1000m 1km

Adding and Subtracting Integers Integers just means positive and negative numbers!

Adding and Subtracting Integers 3 – 7 = - 4 Adding a negative is 4 + (-9) = -5 the same as subtracting! -7 – 8 = -15 -2 + (-12) = -14 -5 – (-25) = 20 Subtracting a negative is (-8) – (-9) = 1 the same as adding!

Multiplying and Dividing Fractions (-3) x 7 Same signs = positive answer 54 ÷ −9 (-4) x (-8) (-12) ÷ −2 - 5 x (25 – 30) Different signs = negative answer ((-8) x 6) ÷3 = -21 = -6 = 32 = 6 = 25 = 16

Time Intervals When working out time difference we will use the Counting on Method. This method will always work Example Find the time difference between 08 40 hrs and 11 10hrs. Answer 2 hours + 20 mins + 10 mins = 2 hours and 30 mins Nearest hour Hours What’s left 20 mins 2 hours 10 mins 8 40 Original time 09 00 11 00 11 10
