Idiom Phrase particular to one language that cannot be understood by knowing word meanings. Examples: * It’s raining cats and dogs * That’s the pot calling the kettle black

Conflict Hyperbole An exaggeration The central problem in the story. It can be internal or external Hyperbole An exaggeration

Personification Metaphor Giving human traits to non-human objects A comparison which states one thing is another.

Simile A comparison that uses like or as. Irony A difference between what is expected and what actually occurs, a surprising twist of events.
