Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [IG-BAN Related Issues] Date Submitted: [September, 2006] Source: [Huan-Bang Li, Kenichi Takizawa, Bin Zhen, Kamya Yekeh Yazdandoost, and Ryuji Kohno] Company [National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT)] Contact: Huan-Bang Li. Voice:[+81 46 847 5104, E-Mail: lee@nict.go.jp] Abstract: [Current statue and further issues for IG-BAN] Purpose: [To help forwarding the discussion in IG-BAN] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. IG-BAN Related Issues Huan-Bang Li, Kenichi Takizawa, Bin Zhen, Kamya Keyeh Yazdandoost, and Ryuji Kohno National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT)

Motivations To address the current status of IG-BAN To speed up the discussions in IG-BAN To clear up the conditions of lifting IG-BAN to SG

Works Had Been Done Call for applications Call for regulation issues Discussion on project authorization request (PAR) Discussion on 5C

Identity of IG-BAN By the Group (From 0343-01) Other 802 standards BAN Configuration 15.3, 15.4 MAC single scalable MAC with reliable delivery Power consumption Low power consumption Extremely low power while communicating to protect human tissue Power source Conventional power source Possible scavenge operation Requirements Low latency guaranteed response to external stimuli Frequency band ISM Medical authorities approved bands for in and around human body Channel Air Air in and around human body

Draft on 5C (partial) 3. DISTINCT IDENTITY (From 0343-01) 3. DISTINCT IDENTITY b) One unique solution per problem (not two solutions to a problem). The proposed standard will address a unique solution for body area networks that provide short-range communications, in and around human body, addressing emerging markets such as continuous vital signal monitoring, assistance to people with disabilities, and entertainment oriented applications, with consideration for human body safety.

Two Questions From 802 EC --- No.1 Can you use BAN with cows ? Main applications considered are health care services, assistance to people with disability, and body interaction and entertainment. IG-BAN can be extend to other applications where it is needed and it can support. We should cover a wider variety of applications than just medical care services.

Two Questions From 802 EC --- No.2 Where do you put the antenna? Smaller size compared to current other standards On the same chip with other components Non-expensive implementation On the other hand, an antenna specified to medical care systems may need some special requirements such as a directional antenna protecting a human body.

Geared Up To Be a Study Group? Adequate needs for BAN? Increasing requirements for ICT based health supporting medical system. Greater than ever needs for applications on and in vicinity of human body. Sufficient application scenarios for BAN? Plenty of examples Effective supporting technologies? Many good candidates To be specified for BAN
