The American Dream During the 50's and 60's, the number of Americans who owned a TV set went from under one million to over forty-four million  For the first time in 1952, Americans could watch the Republican and Democratic conventions – they knew that Eisenhower and Stevenson would run against each other instantaneously  JFK and Nixon's debate was  aired, and that gave JFK the upper hand
