Respiratory Disorders Mrs. Ward Ridge Road Middle School Respiratory Disorders

Science Starter 01/07 (Must be 5-6 sentences) Page 114 We need to breathe air to stay alive. Wow, the respiratory system sure has an important job! What are some factors that influence how well the respiratory system works? Discuss which influences are harmful and which are helpful. What can you do to keep your respiratory system healthy?

Measuring Lung Capacity Can you think of a way that we could measure the amount of air our lungs can hold?

Measuring Lung Capacity Materials: Sharpie Marker Balloons Measuring Tape Procedure: Take turns with your partner! One person completes the activity, the other records, and then you switch!

Measuring Lung Capacity Exhale normally. When you are done, blow into your balloon and force out any remaining air to blow up the balloon. YOU ONLY GET ONE BREATH! HOLD THE BALLOON BUT DO NOT TIE IT!!! Have your partner draw a line with the Sharpie around the largest part of the balloon Record the measurement in centimeters in your chart. Repeat this step 4 more times. Average your result.

Measuring Lung Capacity Inhale normally. When you are done, blow into your balloon and force out the air to blow up the balloon. HOLD THE BALLOON BUT DO NOT TIE IT. Have your partner draw a line with the Sharpie around the largest part of the balloon. Record the measurement in CM in your chart under INHALE. Record the measurement in centimeters in your chart. Repeat this step 4 more times. Average your result. YOU MAY TIE YOUR BALLOON AND WRITE YOUR NAME WHEN YOU ARE DONE.

Math Extension: Happy PI Day! Using your formula for area of a circle, please calculate the diameter of your balloon using PI and the final circumference of the balloon.
