How to… Find information: Contact a teacher: Visit school website for PDF version of summer assignment Visit class website for editable version and pdf version of summer assignment (as well as other helpful links): www.mrsperezenglish.wix.com/class Visit class website for a copy of this powerpoint Contact a teacher: Email me at nperez@tusd.net or lauraochoa@tusd.net We will only be checking once a week, so if it takes a while, you will have to be patient We will NOT check our email the weekend before school starts, which means DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!

Step 1: read Read Common Sense by Thomas Paine You can download it for free for the kindle and Nook apps Or you can view it for free by following this link Or if you would like to annotate the text (which I HIGHLY suggest you do) you can by a written version on line or at Barnes and Noble. Yes, it really is that short, don’t freak out that you didn’t get the right version

Step 2: Write: Due FIRST day of class All of the following MUST be typed: Complete the “Part One: Biographical Information” worksheet Complete “Part Two: Dialectic Journal” (20 entries) Complete “Part Three: SOAPStone breakdown” Complete “Part Four: Annotation Worksheet”

Step 3: Syndicated Columnist: due second day of class Pick TWO authors from the provided list Read FIVE columns by each author Write a rhetorical précis for each column (you should end up with TEN préci) Follow the attached format, or the following link is helpful: précis format The format is VERY VERY VERY specific, you must follow it EXACTLY if you want full credit

Step 4: Rhetorical terminology Study (and MEMORIZE) the provided list of rhetorical terms and their definitions Create a flashcard for each term: due on the second day of class We will take a quiz on the third day of class The following link is helpful, if you have any questions about a definition or its use: rhetorical terms
