6. A. Did she use to have long hair? B. Yes, she did. 7. A. Did she use to wear glasses? B. No, she didn’t. 8. A. Did she use to be married?

Exercise …

Sentences I would like you to read your sentences to your group. Your group will be listening for grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation errors. Ex: My phone has a lot of memory. Is this sentence correct? No! Although this sentence makes sense, we learned that memories are things from your past that you remember.

Warm up: Secrets I would like for you to write a “secret” about yourself, but you have to use used to in your secret. Ex. I used to run 4 miles every day. I will collect your “secrets” and give you someone else’s “secret.” You need to find the person who wrote the secret, but do not ask him or her: Did you use to run 4 miles a day? Instead, you must ask questions like: Did you like to exercise? Did you have a daily routine?

Example secret My sister and I used to steal packets of sugar from the store after school. What kinds of questions can you ask? Do you have a sister? Were you a good child? Did you use to do anything fun after school?

Pronunciation pp. 54

Would vs. Used to

I used to play with my brother.=I would play with my brother. We used to have a good time.= We would have a great time. Be careful! Would can’t be used for past situations. (non-actions)

I used to love the power rangers. What is my main verb? Love. Is love an action verb? No. We can’t use would + love I would love cake? What is the meaning of this?

Telling stories When telling a story, you can begin the first sentence with used to, but then, use would give more details or examples. Do not begin a story with would.

Exercise 5, pp. 52

Exercise 6 Listening

Exercise 8

Speaking practice What kind of student did you use to be? Who used to be your best friend? Where did you use to go on weekends? What sports did you use to practice? What were your favorite games?

Exercise 9

Reading Quiz I will read the reading for you and ask if you have any questions. I will give you 30 minutes to take the quiz.

Exercise 10 Write two paragraphs about your life. In the first paragraph, write about how your life used to be in the past. In the second paragraph, describe your life today. Remember * We often begin with used to and then change to would.
