Presentation transcript:

About Research and Citations The Digital Era has made it very easy to look up information, but a lot harder to do academic research and properly cite sources More sources with questionable credibility A lot more variables for citations Information about the source can be hard to find

Notice: no commas or “pg.”!! In-Text Citations (Smith 42) Standard: Author’s last name and page number (“Mythology” 36) Title and page number (no author) (“The World of Mythology”) Title (no author/page numbers available) (Haniken) Author (no page numbers available) Notice: no commas or “pg.”!!

About Titles Titles are either italicized or in “quotation marks” These marks indicate different things: Use “quotes” for short stories, chapters of books, web pages, short videos Use italics for books, websites, full-length films

About Punctuation Be very careful about following punctuation rules for your citations. They are consistent, and should be consistently followed Generally, there is a period at the end of each piece of information. Commas and colons separate items within a section of information.

End Citations Last name, First name. Title of the Book. City of Publication: Name of Publisher, Year or Publication. Print. Smith, James. The Mythology of Ancient Greece. New York: Brown Publishing, 1998. Print.

End Citations Last name, First name. “Page title.” Website title. Sponsoring Organization. Date of Publication or Last Update. Web. Date of Last Access. Thomas, Susan. “Zeus.” Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses. The Grecian History Foundation. 24 January 2011. Web. 8 February 2016.

Tools You Can Use Purdue’s Online Writing Lab website Easybib.com Entire section of website dedicated to MLA format for citations. Helpful models and explanations. This is a great free style guide. Easybib.com This tool will allow you to plug in the information you have about a source and it will format the citation for you The catch is that it’s only as good as the info you put in! Garbage in = garbage out. YOU are ultimately responsible for making sure it is accurate.
