Physical and Human Regions Globalization Maps 5 Themes of Geography Physical and Human Regions Globalization Maps
What is Geography? Geography is the study of how people interact with the world around them, how they interact with each other, and how they affect or are affected by the land It involves: Climate Geology Economics Biology History Politics
Physical Geography The scientific study of the natural features of the Earth's surface including land formation, climate, soil, currents, and distribution of flora and fauna. (plants and animals)
Human Geography Human geography focuses on the relationships between humans and the environments in which they operate. Globalization is becoming increasingly important
5 Themes of Geography Location- Where we live Physical and Cultural characteristics of a place- how does the land affect us Regions (formal, functional, perceptual)- describing an area Movement of people and objects- the exchange of ideas and people Human and environment interact- people changing the land
Lines of Latitude vs Longitude Latitude are a geographic coordinate that define how far North or South a location is from the equator Run east-west as circles parallel to the equator. Lines of Longitude are a geographic coordinate that define how far east or west a location is from the Prime Meridian Runs North South parallel to the Prime Meridian
The Physical Characteristics of a Place Will Impact How People Live Landforms, bodies of water, soil, and mineral deposits can bring advantages and disadvantages or both Victoria BC has abundant forests and access to the ocean, yet it also has heavy rainfall, and it is secluded from the mainland (stupid ferry!)
Regions Regions are areas that have common characteristics such as government, landforms, or climate They are the basic unit of study for geography The coast The interior The Middle East South-East Asia
Formal Regions Based on official boundaries, such as cities and provinces Can also include areas that share physical or climate similarities Usually widely accepted
Functional Regions Based on connections created by activity such as communication or trade These regions only exist as long as the agreement or flow exists Example- NAFTA North American Free Trade Agreement
Perceptual Regions Determined by peoples attitudes and feelings This type of region usually has meaning only to individuals who have a mental map of it as a region Example- The Interior
Global Village Global village is a term to described how the globe has been changed into a village by technology and the instant movement of information Technology has removed all distance between people and places
Globalization The process of economic, technological, political, and cultural forces creating a single economy created a world of rapid movement and interaction, and increasingly fast communication Goods, people, ideas, fads, fashions, and movements spread over the world
Developing countries and cultures are forced to compete with Western industrialized powers
Impacting the World Around Us Over 80% of the planet's surface has been touched by human interaction. Humans depend on the environment and adapt to it, but they also try to change it dramatically Geographers are interested in knowing how humans change the natural environment
Political Maps Political maps have to do with government. show where the boundaries and locations of countries, states, cities, towns and counties are. boundaries and locations are determined by people rather than nature.
Historical Maps maps that reflect historical events or past and geographic factors. Historical maps show the distribution of ancient cultures and states, indicate social movements and trade routes, and so on.
Special Purpose or Theme Maps emphasize a particular theme or special topic such as population density and distribution. do not focus on natural features like rivers, cities, political subdivisions and highways.
Physical or Topographical Maps characterized by large-scale detail showing the features of the earth's surface by means of contour lines to show changes in elevation Show both natural and man-made features.
