Figure 1 Polycomb Proteins Regulate a Gene Hierarchy in Differentiation (A) In embryonic stem (ES) cells, mechanisms mediated by Polycomb group (PcG) proteins contribute to the stability of the pluripotent state at multiple levels in the gene hierarchy. (B) Once cells enter the epidermal pathway, the upper levels of the hierarchy, as well as alternative differentiation pathways, are permanently shut off by PcG-independent mechanisms. PcG regulation now moves down the gene hierarchy to control the proper deployment of epidermal differentiation genes.
