Agreement of Adjectives and Syntax Chapter Two: Agreement of Adjectives and Syntax

What is an adjective?

Adjectives modify nouns This means they limit the noun in size, color, texture, etc. Adjectives describe nouns Adjectives can be in the: attributive position or predicate position

The poet was angry because his girlfriend dumped him The poet was angry because his girlfriend dumped him. The angry poet threatened his ex- girlfriend’s lovers. Then the girlfriend came back to him and he wrote love poetry again. Finally she left him again but he was not angry towards her lovers, he was furious at her.

Adjectives are usually next to the noun they modified, but often after it (even in the attributive position) GNC  adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in gender, number, case

Syntax Greek: συνταττειν = to arrange Syntax is the arrangement of words in a sentence according to their grammatical function English vs. Latin A few rules: Verb must agree with subject in number and person Adjective must agree with noun in GNC

Puella mea mē nōn amat. Valē puella Puella mea mē nōn amat. Valē puella! Catullus obdūrat: poēta puellam nōn amat, fōrmam puellae nōn laudat, puellae rosās nōn dat, et puellam nōn bāsiat! Ira mea est magna! Obdūrō, mea peulla – sed sine tē non valeō.
