Day 56 Characterization, LotF, and Infinitives

Objectives Understand and Identify Characterization in The Necklace. Homework: Bring R&J on Monday.

Warm Up Take out a piece of paper and fold it in half long ways. On one side, write “Direct Characterization” and the write “Indirect Characterization” on the other. Write as many examples as you can for the character Kari. Remember what direct and indirect mean? https://youtu.be/0dQpFu8uRP0

Grammar Time!

Grammar – Infinitive Phrases Infinitives -> verb form that acts as a noun, adjective, or an adverb and most begin with to. Ex: I want to go. Infinitive phrases -> infinitive + any modifiers / complements. The entire phrase can be used as a noun, adjective, or an adverb. Ex: I want to nap before dinner.

Infinitives – Take Notes! To wait seemed foolish when decisive action was required. (Subject) Everyone wanted to go. (Direct Object) His ambition is to fly. (Predicate nominative) He Lacked the strength to resist. (Adjective) We must study to learn. (Adverb)

Characterization

Characterization Literary device used to explain the traits of a character in a story. Information is expressed in two ways: Direct -> The character’s information is shared by the narrator, another character, or the character themselves. Example -> Johnny was a poor depressed soul but he had the heart of a lion. Indirect -> The character’s information is shared subtly. The reader must deduce the character’s information via the thoughts, actions, and appearance of the character. Example -> Johnny stated defiantly, “ I will not give in to my oppressors!”

Character Definitions Static: A character who undergoes little or no inner change. Dynamic: A character who undergoes an important inner change. Round: A major character who encounters conflict and is changed by it. Flat: A stock character that undergoes no change but can add to the story. Protagonist: The main character, or hero, of a story. Antagonist: The adversary of the hero. The “bad guy”. Foil: A character whose characteristics are in direct contrast to another. This is used to highlight the traits of the other character.

Lotf characterization 10 min. Get into your 4 person groups. You will be assigned a character from LotF. Your group needs to create a Google PowerPoint presentation about the characterization of your person.

Project Requirements 1. Title slide -> with group’s names 2. Introduce your character -> Name, role in story, what kind of character are they. 3. Slide with Illustration -> Create a picture of your character that shows their personality and role in the story. 4. Slide with Dialogue -> examples of the character’s speech with explanations. 5. Slide with Actions -> examples from the text that depict the character’s actions. These must be explained to demonstrate characterization.

Lotf presentations You will have 5 minutes per presentation. Everyone has to say something about their portion. The audience should remain quiet and take notes.
