WELCOME TO BECKFORD! YEAR 4 INFORMATION MEETING

Year 4 Staff There are 3 Year Four classes: Rhine, Danube and Seine Rhine Class teacher: Debbie O’Brien Seine Class teacher: Lysander Code Danube Class teacher: Frank Seago Year 4 support staff: Kelly Caffrey, Melissa Ling, Vera Shabani

Our day Each class is taught by their class teacher in the mornings for English and Maths. This is in groups of 20. In the afternoon, children move into classes of 30, either Dornfell (with Mr Code) or Ravenshaw (with Mr Seago). Class teachers teach every subject, except music and PE, which are taught by specialist teachers. A range of other professionals may also work with the children.

Year Three and Year Four make up Lower KEY STAGE TWO. In KS2 we offer a balanced and broadly based curriculum which: Promotes the spiritual, moral, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and in society. Prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. Engenders an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.

Year Three and Year Four make up Lower KEY STAGE TWO.

Key Stage Two Core subjects: English Mathematics Science Foundation subjects: Art and Design Computing Design and Technology Geography History Music Physical Education PSSHE

During Key Stage Two children work towards the National Curriculum Standards for each year group. The National Curriculum has set out standards for the children to achieve by the end of the year. Children will be assessed against these using EMERGING, EXPECTED or AT GREATER DEPTH.

Emerging – working toward the statement Emerging – working toward the statement. Developing understanding in this area. Expected – achieving at the expected level for their age. Your child is exactly where they should be! At Greater Depth – has obtained a greater level of understanding and is able to apply their learning in different contexts.

Reading Comprehension sessions take place in the morning in whole class groups. Extra support for those who need it is available. Children change their reading books as they finish them, choosing from a wide range in the class book corners. Children should be reading every day for 15-20 mins and commenting in their reading records, which are checked daily by their teacher. We also reward home reading using the reading challenge certificates

Maths We focus on: Allowing children to experience maths rather than just see it. Inviting children to explore maths and assisting with problem solving. Encouraging children to talk about maths and develop their understanding independently. Using concrete (objects e.g. counters, cubes) then pictorial (drawing pictures to support) then abstract (numerical) methods to calculate Link to Website – Curriculum – Maths calculation strategy guidance. 8 1

Writing We include grammar sessions at the start of English, and teach spelling rules in separate short bursts through the week. Each week your child will be given some words to learn, and a sheet to practise their spellings on. This should be handed in to the class teacher each Monday. In Year 4, children may also earn their pen license. This is achieved when they have been joining their writing neatly for some time.

Topic We provide a variety of exciting experiences in the children’s Topic learning. This may or may not involve writing, as we think the learning is best when the children are actively involved. Our Topic folders showcase photos, post-it notes, speech bubbles and many other examples of different learning activities. An example of last year’s Topic learning in Year 4 is outside the classroom. Please feel free to browse as you go by…

Our website We update the website regularly Each month, letters (trips etc) are uploaded and will be available for you to print at home. There are also key dates on the first page. You can also see photos of our learning, and general information about Year 4. Link to the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) has resources (from your child’s report) along with links to lots of other resources. Sometimes homework tasks are also available on there.

How to help your child at home KS2 School readiness – good night’s sleep, breakfast, arriving on time, showing an interest in their learning Homework: Mathletics - Weekly 1000 points – if you don’t have computer access, please write your name on this sheet. https://community.mathletics.com/signin/#/student Spelling practice - Weekly Reading - 15 minutes a day and noted in reading record for teacher to check
