R. bromii L2-63 was inoculated into M2 rumen fluid medium containing 0.2% maltose or into the same medium with substitution of rumen fluid by faecal water. Growth was monitored by OD650. Faecal water was prepared from samples provided by five volunteers (v2, v6, v7, v14 and v25). V14 was the second volunteer reported by Walker et al. (2011) who showed low starch fermentation and a very low % ruminococci. Since repeat sampling of v14 was not possible, v14 faecal water was a stored sample from the original study, whereas v25 faecal water from v25, v2, v6 and v7 were from more recent samples (see main text).
