AMS provides good representation. Lesson Starter AMS provides good representation. Provide two pieces of evidence which backs up this statement.

Today we will… Identify the system used to elect representatives to local councils in Scotland.

Success Criteria I can describe the way in which the Single Transferable Vote works. I can list and explain the advantages and disadvantages of STV.

The Single Transferable Vote The Single Transferable Voting system is used for elections to Scottish local councils. There are smaller constituencies (called ‘wards’ in Scottish local councils). Instead of placing ‘X’ next to the candidate of choice, voters can rank candidates 1,2,3,4 etc.

How does the STV work? Watch this short clip first

Parties also can stand more than one candidate if they wish. Overall, STV tends to provide a more proportional result. Unlike FPTP, voters don’t have to put ‘all their eggs in one basket’. They may like more than one candidate and can reflect how they vote. Parties also can stand more than one candidate if they wish. Depending on the voting population of the ward, voters will have a number of representatives.

Advantages Disadvantages Task: STV Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages USE STV resource sheet Using the cut and sort sheet on the following page complete the table for the advantages and disadvantages of the STV system
