Japan The island country!!

Culture: Early Japan 300AD-700 AD Vocabulary: Location in the world Clan Diamyo Constitution Vassal Animism Feudalism Kami Sect Jomon Samurai Shogun USA

Economy Are the ancestors of the Japanese people. The Jomo:10000BC-300BC The Yayoi Are the ancestors of the Japanese people. Introduced farming from Korea and China. Used Bronze metal.

Society Religions Arts and Craft Amaterasu – the sun goddess. Susanowo – the storm god. Chiefs were buried in a KOFUN. People were organized by CLANS

Shinto(nature spirits) Religions Government Shinto(nature spirits) All things in nature have a spirit = animism. A nature spirit is called a kami will help you if your spirit is pure. Buddhism Emperor (Jimmu) Constitution – a plan on how the government is to operate. Japan was divided into provinces and districts.

Religions Government Buddhism Emperor (Shotoku) the power of the Emperor is based on controlling the 20% of farmable land. Govt jobs given to nobles without testing. Regents from the Fujiwara family would rule until an Emperor became old enough.

Samurai and shogun develop To keep nobles happy, they were given land to control. In order to stop other nobles from taking their rewarded land, nobles would hire SAMURAI (or “serving ones”). The samurai lived by a set of rules called the “BUSHIDO code.” During Japan’s Civil War (Gempei Wars 1180) Japan’s two strongest families: Taira family V.S Minamoto family used their SAMURAI to battle each other. Minamoto Yoritomo won and was named SHOGUN or military ruler.

Now Japan has two Rulers An Emperor and A military ruler (Shogun) Controls the military. Rules mostly in name.
