Supporting Others Explain that this assembly is about the importance of supporting other people when they are going through a hard time. We all have mental health just as we all have physical health and both can fluctuate. We all go through difficulties in life and a kind word from a friend can make all the difference.

#MakeTime Film Show the #MakeTime Film, available on youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzs57qNYg08&list=PLW8cG1kJhcvfyXxGSf6Hr977CyOz_BltJ Ask the group to reflect on what friendship means to them and what they value most about their friendships. Explain that your school/organisation is supporting the Time to Change campaign, which is England’s biggest campaign to end mental health stigma and discrimination. At least 1 in 10 young people will experience a mental health problem. All of us will experience life’s ups and downs. Life moves fast, we’re so busy, sometimes we don’t even notice when the people around us might be having a tough time. This can leave people feeling alone and isolated. But we can all make a difference by reaching out to others

Explain that these are some tips that other young people compiled about what makes a difference. Ask the group to look at the tips and discuss in pairs which one they each feel is most important and why. Conclude by reminding the group; it’s not your job to ‘fix’ someone’s problems but you can make a big difference by simply staying in someone’s life and being the friend you have always been. If you are concerned about your own or a friend’s mental health, seek support from a trusted adult such as a teacher.
