Class Agenda for 3/9/15 ACT Prep Presentations (10-15 min) Proverb to Ponder with Discussion (15 min) What is a civilized society? Post-it note definition debate (30 min) Final Project Planning (30 min) Today you will, in writing and orally, use words, phrases, and clauses to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships between the content of a book with the definition “civilized” to infer the author’s purpose on writing Things Fall Apart with a collaborative structure for discussion, focused writing, and phrases such as “Achebe used _________ to convey the concept of ______.”

Proverb to Ponder – A Text-Based Work by Banksy in Gaza

What is a civilized society? Step One: Look at the definitions around the classroom. Pick TWO definitions that you either strongly agree or disagree with and write a response on the post-it notes provided where you connect your response with an event or character from Things Fall Apart. Place those post-it notes on the corresponding definitions around the room. Make sure your name is on it. Step Two: You will pick the definition and response that you had a strong connection with while writing and stand next to that definition. Each member of that group will discuss their post-it notes as well as read the remaining post-it notes. Summarize the discussion below in no less than four complete sentences that reflect the group members’ thoughts as well as your thoughts. Did your opinion change? Answer the self-reflection question on your own. Put this in the period basket after you finish and get out your TFA Final Project planning.

TFA Final Project Planning You will be put in to groups of 2-3 people to discuss your planning. By the end of the planning session, each person will have a well-written thesis statement and show this to Mrs. Testa on the provided index card (you will take this home with you). You have ONE WEEK to work on your final project. This is due on Monday, March 16, 2015. You have no testing on Thursday, March 12, 2015 – good day for a paper! 3 page typed essay that answers one of the unit questions (hint: we discussed at length today and during the Socratic Seminar the notion of a civilized society) 1 creative piece to supplement your answer – see the handout for ideas Email me your essay or bring the printed copy to class. Come to class early if you need to print your essay! Email me at jacquelin_testa@dpsk12.org if you have questions or visit my web site at www.mrstesta.weebly.com PARCC schedule: Juniors take English tests on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 from 7:30am-11:00am Juniors take Geometry or Algebra tests on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, from 11:00am- 2:45pm Check with your AP and CU Succeeds teachers for class times during PARCC testing
