Operator Only one person at a time should operate these machines Teacher/Operator The work should be prepared to a rough circular or octagonal shape before being secured to the machine. Timber with shakes or flaws should not be used. Teacher/ Technician / Operator The greatest discretion must be exercised when turning built-up constructions as these are potentially dangerous. Teacher/Technician Work piece slipping / flying out. All work should be safely secured between centres or to a face-plate using screws of a suitable length. Once a pupil has set up a lathe for operation, it must be checked by the teacher before use. The work should be rotated by hand to ensure it is free running before the power is switched on. Injury to fingers/hands/wrists due to tool sticking. These machines must only be operated when a qualified technical teacher is in the room. The most appropriate tool rest for the operation being undertaken should be used . This should be adjusted as necessary during operation to allow safe clearance. The lathe should be stopped while adjustments are made. The lathe must never be stopped by gripping the chuck, work piece , faceplate or driving fork. The lathe speed should be appropriate to the bulk and nature of the timber being turned. This should only be altered with the machine power is isolated. Lathe tools should be long, strong and sharp and have securely fitted handles. Teacher/Operator/ Technician Getting drawn into the rotating shaft or work piece. Operators should not wear loose clothing and long hair must be contained so as not to be a hazard. Where clothing cannot be removed due to religious belief, every effort must be made to ensure that all loose items are contained. Abrasive material should only be applied when the tool rest is removed and all tools are replaced in their racks. Exposure to dust and injury due to slipping on dust The dust extractor must be used at all times. The machine should be swept down after use with the power off.
