FMP Proposal

Genre The magazine I am producing for my FMP will be centred around gaming and tech, with a more heavy emphasis on the gaming side. I chose these topics as I’m very knowledgeable and passionate about them and they have a large audience behind them, making it a mainstream topic, allowing me to cater to my audience much more easily. I chose to combine these genres as they are very closely linked and feature similar articles and topics, they are so similar due to technology being the foundation of gaming and people enjoy gaming are often into the tech behind it and vice versa.

Title The title of my magazine is “Pixel.” this was decided after brainstorming names based on my genre. The name uses the term pixel as it prevalent in both gaming and technology, pixels being what makes up an image on a screen. The other names I came up with were Dot and T3CH, the reasoning behind these were: -Dot: Short, easy to remember, commonly used term when talking about websites, scrapped it in favour of “Pixel.” -T3CH: Short, gives you an Idea of the topics covered, modern, scrapped as it doesn’t represent the gaming side of the magazine, feels a bit immature and is too similar to the tech magazine T3. “Pixel.” also got better feedback than the other names listed when presenting these names to my focus groups.

Target audience My target audience consists of gamers, that are teens and young adults (16-21), with a slight male preference, however this magazine could easily be enjoyed by women and many different age groups. The reason why this is the target audience is because gaming is a very popular past-time especially with young males. The audience will be mainstreamers as gaming is a very popular hobby and there’s many different crowds that enjoy it. My target audience will be in C2DE section of the economic scale.

Price Due to my target audience of teens I will slightly reduce the price of my magazine to be just under magazines of the same genre. Most monthly magazines like mine tend to be around the figure of £3.99 Due to teenagers being on the lower end of the economic scale I will most likely reduce my price to around £3.50

Aesthetics: Colours My background colours will most likely look like this: I believe these colours will be effective in my magazine as they look sleek and professional and not too overpowering, making them aesthetically pleasing. The accent colours however may be more bold and bright than this to contrast with these subtle tones and make them clearly visible and eye catching.

Aesthetics: Images For the images, it would be a combination of screenshots from games and pictures of products such as games, consoles, phones and tech in general. For games I would probably include screenshots of main characters. For tech I would take images of products. If an interview is conducted, I’d most likely include a photo of the interviewee.

Layout Ideas

Layout Out of these layouts, I am going to try to replicate the 2nd style. This is because it provides all the necessary information and visual stimuli without overwhelming the viewer

Content In my magazine, I will produce 2 double page spreads. I will create a feature about Virtual reality. (History of VR, Impact on gaming, technology behind it.) This will feature mostly pictures of the VR Headset in use, aswell as the product itself, some screenshots of VR games may also be included. I may also include a feature based around indie games, notable examples, the development that goes into them and their rise to popularity. This will almost exclusively feature game screenshots but there may be possibly photos of consoles, equipment or maybe a developer themselves.

What makes my magazine unique? My POV is my own- Due to the magazine being written by me,a teenager, rather than a fully fledged company, my target audience can connect and relate to me much easier, as I am more like them. Which increases the relevance of my views for my audience. The magazine, is mainly a gaming magazine, but it includes elements of a tech magazine, bringing gamers a bit more background knowledge on their games and system, most gaming magazines focus only on the games themselves.
