Today’s Agenda Daily Starter Using Other Punctuation and Capitalizing Words Quotation Marks with Other Punctuation Research Paper Full draft due for grammar workshops Monday, May 13 Final draft due Friday, May 17 Homework Quiz corrections Continue work on research paper

Daily Starter How would you explain apostrophe use to a friend? Be sure to touch base on contractions, possessives, and unnecessary apostrophes.

Quotation Marks with Other Punctuation The “Rule of Two” may help you remember where these punctuation marks go when paired with quotation marks… Two go inside (periods and commas) Two go outside (colons and semicolons) Two can go either place, depending on meaning (question marks and exclamation points)

Quotation Marks with Other Punctuation Unquote Tip: Take whatever is inside the quotation marks out of the sentence and out of the quotation marks. Now, how would you punctuate this new sentence? If you would use a question mark or an exclamation point, then this same punctuation belongs inside the closing quotation mark in the original sentence. Example: Sam asked, “Do you want to play tennis”? Tip applied: Do you want to play tennis? Example: Have you read Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven?” Tip applied: The Raven

Let’s Practice! Using the Rule of Two as a guide, correct any misplaced punctuation in the following sentences. If the sentence is correct as written, write OK. Adele had one of her biggest hits with “Rolling in the Deep”. She described this song as a “dark bluesy gospel disco tune”. Are you still writing a paper about Hughes’s poem, “I, Too, Sing America?” Someone screamed, “Watch out for that tree!” The sign read, “Keep Out”, but I asked myself, “Who would mind if I went in”?
