PIRATE COLLEGE ACADEMY Period 1 SUBJECT Date: 7 to 9 Sept 2011 Loc: Rm 50 – W. Martin MATH 6A – PER 2 & 6 SCIENCE/HEALTH – PER 3 &4 PIRATE COLLEGE ACADEMY Period 1 STANDARD 2.4 I want you to explain to me how much you know about math using symbols, charts, verbal and written explanation or discussion. 7.B I want you to know what a science laboratory is and how to do scientific investigation. Know how science impacts your daily life. 1.0 I want you to be able to solve problems that involve fractions. LEARNING OBJECTIVE I want you to get familiar with the teacher, other students, and the math material you will get this week. I want you to be familiar with lab safety and preview your new Science Book learning all about Scientific Investigation and Inquiry. Distinguish between an proper and improper fraction. I need to find out what you have learned about this in 5th grade. AGENDA Icebreaker Teacher introduction Student introductions Review Math syllabus Brain Pop video on lab safety Review Science syllabus DO NOW ACTIVITY Take out a sheet of paper and write down things about the student next to you. Example: name, favorite teacher, school, summer vacation Take out a sheet of paper and tell me what you want to learn in 6th grade Science this year. What type of Scientist do you want to be when you grow up? Take out a sheet of paper and write down what school you came from and who was your best teacher. What did you learn there? HOMEWORK Review your new Math book and be able to do the Scavenger Hunt on page 15. Review your Science book and be able to do the Scavenger Hunt on page 1. Make a list of all your math strengths and weaknesses. List them in priority from your best to worst areas. TEST Scavenger Hunt, page 15 in Math book. Scavenger Hunt, page 1 in your Science book. Pirate College Academy Math Pre-test EXTRA CREDIT Draw a color picture of your last Math class and list everything you learned in that class for me. Draw a color picture of what a science laboratory looks like. See if you can draw and label as many scientific things in your lab and be able to discuss them. Write and information paper using Cornell notes and tell me what is the Pirate College Academy.
