Electronic Resources Global Positioning System (GPS) A Global Positioning System is a network of mapping and navigation satellites orbiting Earth. The Global Positioning System can calculate your exact position anywhere on Earth. The GPS receiver can also map out a route to a destination. You can receive real-time directions, with a map and your current location visible on the screen.

Calculating Distances Maps include mileage markers, which give mileage between towns, junctions, or interchanges. The number between any two mileage markers represents the distance in miles between those two points. Vehicle Preparation Preparation of your vehicle is essential to ensuring a safe trip. Know how to check the oil level and change a flat tire. Be sure you pack all the necessary items you’ll need for emergencies or hazardous weather, such as tire chains or jumper cables. Vehicle Check Be sure that all systems are checked by a trained technician. Check the level of all fluids. Be sure that the headlights, turn signals, mirrors, and windshield wipers are working properly. Check your spare tire and keep a tire gauge in your vehicle.

Emergency Equipment Be sure to pack the following items as you prepare your vehicle for the trip: extra oil, antifreeze, and windshield-washer fluid an unused, easily operated A-B-C-type fire extinguisher first-aid kit, flares or reflectors, and a flashlight jumper cables or battery charger and spare fuses mechanic’s gloves, and a wrench, screwdriver, and pliers

Winter-Driving Equipment You will want to pack: blankets, sleeping bags, and additional warm clothing tire chains or all-weather tires with good tread plenty of water and non-perishable food a window ice scraper and small shovel tow line and sand bags for extra traction

Weight Check Exceeding your vehicle’s maximum weight load may make your vehicle unstable. If you must travel with a heavy load: Use the highest recommended tire pressure. Personal Preparation A good way to organize your personal items is to make a checklist so you won’t forget anything essential.
