Ch. 7.6 Notes Cellular Respiration (Anaerobic)

Anaerobic Let’s break down Definition: the word: Your body under normal conditions What type of cellular respiration does your body use most of the time? Doesn’t require oxygen An = not Aero = air Aerobic, because you aren’t using your oxygen too quickly under normal conditions

Your body during exercise What happens to your breathing when you start to exercise? Why does this happen? Start to breathe deeper & faster You use oxygen faster because your muscles are doing cellular respiration quicker than normal

Anaerobic Cellular Respriation When does your body switch from aerobic to anaerobic cellular respiration? Why does this happen? How can you tell your body has switched? When your muscles use oxygen faster than you can breathe it in Cellular respiration is happening VERY quickly to give your muscles energy You feel the burn or get tired!

Anaerobic Cellular Respiration in Humans

Anaerobic Cellular Respiration in Animals

Steps of Anerobic Cellular Respiration 1. 2. So does Glycolysis require oxygen? How do you know? Fermentation Definition: Glycolysis Fermentation No It is the first step of both aerobic and anerobic cellular respiration Making ATP without oxygen

Two types of Anaerobic Cellular Respiration 1. Lactic Acid Fermentation: - Who uses it? -What does it do? -What is the overall equation? -Why is it important? Animals (including humans) Provides ATP energy when you are working out very hard Pyruvic Acid  Lactic Acid + ATP It allows you to keep exercising long after you run out of oxygen in your muscles

Two types of Anaerobic Cellular Respiration How much ATP is made during fermentation? 2. Alcoholic Fermentation: - Who uses it? -What is the overall equation? -Why is it important? ** Drinking pure ____________ will kill you…it must be watered down!** Bacteria & yeast Pyruvic Acid  Ethyl Alcohol + Carbon dioxide+ ATP It allows these organisms to live where there is no oxygen (deep ocean) 2 alcohol

How we use fermentation! What are some of the ways that people use alcoholic fermentation? What are some ways that people use lactic acid fermentation? To make: Alcohol – beer, liquor, wine Bread – CO2 bubbles cause it to rise To make from milk: cheese & yogurt

Uses for fermentation…
