Know Your PC

What is a Computer? An electronic machine, operating under the control of instructions

Data & Information Data: Collection of Raw Unprocessed Facts Unorganized

Data & Information Cont. Data that is ORGANIZED and MEANINGFUL

User Someone that communicates with a computer or uses the information it generates

Hardware The Electric, Electronic, and Mechanical equipment that makes up your computer

Examples of Hardware Keyboard Mouse Monitor Printer Modem/ethernet Speakers Scanner

Disk Drives A unit, connected to or situated inside the computer, that reads and writes onto disks

CPU CPU = Central Processing Unit The internal operating unit of the computer The “brain”

Software The series of instructions that tells the hardware how to perform

The Components of a Computer INPUT DEVICES

What is Input? Input: is the data entered into a computer

Input Devices

Keyboard *arrangement of letter, number, & symbols used to input characters and commands into the computer

Mouse A small handheld device that contains at least one button Controls the movement on the screen

Microphone Allows the user to speak to the computer in order to enter data and control the actions of the computer

Other Input Devices Scanner Touch Screen

Summary of Input Devices What is an Input Device? Name Two Input Devices What is Data?

Output Devices Any hardware Component that can convey information to the user

Monitor TV-like device used to display text and graphic images on a screen

Monitors Various shapes and sizes LCD – liquid crystal display

Printers A unit attached to a computer that produces text and graphics on a physical medium such as paper * This paper is also known as a “hard copy”

Types of Printers Dot Matrix – characters are formed by a series of dots Ink-jet – ink is sprayed directly on the paper to form characters Laser- a laser beam creates a pattern of electrical charges which attract black toner and transfer the image to paper

Storage Devices

Storage Devices Holds data, instructions, and information for future use

Types of Storage Devices Disk CD-Rom CD-rw USB Stick (Jump Drive)

Processing The combination of Input, Output, and Storage. All components are required to make processing occur.

INPUT + OUTPUT + STORAGE = Processing Cycle INPUT + OUTPUT + STORAGE = PROCESSING

Summary Answer these Questions on Your OS Worksheet 1. Name an output device 2. Name a storage device 3. What is Processing? 4. What is the Processing Cycle?
