Tools of the Mind Kindergarten Treasure! Tools of the Mind Kindergarten

Theodore Scott Pirates stole booty from other ships. Sometimes they used what they stole right away, like food or clothing, but sometimes they were lucky enough to steal gold which they needed to save until they were back at home. Then they hid their treasure so that others couldn’t find and steal it.

How were these pirates going to hide their treasure?

Show with your body how this pirate was using a shovel to dig a hole Show with your body how this pirate was using a shovel to dig a hole. What was he doing with his foot? Do you think the sand was easy or hard to dig into? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pirate.jpg

Who do you think does the work to bury the treasure chest? How can you tell from the picture? “Bury it good, mateys,” says the captain. “We don’t want anyone finding this until we come back for it!” http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pyle_pirates_burying2.jpg

Hmm…is it to the right? …or to the left? Do you think pirates ever worried about how they would find the right spot when they came back to dig up the treasure?

Sometimes pirates drew maps so that they would know where to look for their treasure.

What details did the pirates include on this map that would help them find their treasure? Turn and tell a friend something you see on this map.

After looking at the map, the sailing master uses his compass to figure out where to go.

“Ahoy, mateys, I think it’s that way! Row faster!”

Once the treasure is found, the pirates share it. The quartermaster is responsible for dividing it up fairly. Everyone gets the same amount except for the captain, who gets double.

Each pirate waits to receive his share of the booty Each pirate waits to receive his share of the booty. How do you think they are they feeling right now?
