Constructed Responses Writing Constructed Responses

“Constructed Response” What does “Constructed Response” mean?

Constructed = Built Response = Answer

When a teacher says, Constructed Response…

...students will usually think short essay, but remember...

...every good builder needs a good set of blueprints!

that we can abbreviate as Our Blueprint Plan is a Writing Strategy that we can abbreviate as RAISE

R Restate the question. Use the same wording from the writing prompt and give it right back to them!

A Answer the question simply and without offering any “extra” information yet.

I Include / Introduce your supporting evidence. I know this because… The article states…

S Support your answer and offer evidence from the text.

E Explain/Extend your response. Make a personal connection, offer a judgment, etc.

Put on your hardhats... we’re entering the construction zone!

Time to Practice Imagine that Rikki is a person rather than a mongoose. Is he the type of person you would like to have for a friend? Why or why not? Be sure to support your answer with evidence from the story. Use the RAISE method to write your response.
