“In Christ Alone” verse 1 In Christ alone my hope is found; he is my light, my strength, my song— this cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ I stand.

“In Christ Alone” verse 2 In Christ alone, who took on flesh— fullness of God in helpless babe!— this gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones he came to save. ’Til on the cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live.

“In Christ Alone” verse 3 There in the ground his body lay, light of the world by darkness slain; then, bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave he rose again! And as he stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me; for I am his and he is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.

“In Christ Alone” verse 4 No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me; from life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no human plan, can ever pluck me from his hand; ’til he returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

Culture Getting in your church Habakkuk 1:1-6, 3: 1-2,16-19

Culture getting in your church - H.= Habakkuk Habakkuk unique: speaks to God for people. Problem H. sees: injustice in God’s world. H. asks God: how can you use an evil tool? With Jeremiah, Nahum, & Zephaniah he served 625-575 B.C. – Judah lost everything! Significant events in the era: Fall of Nineveh & King Josiah’s death

Culture getting in your church - H.= Habakkuk Society went from relatively stable to oppressive and violent. (see Jer. 22:17) H. saw corruption/evil grow, rich enslaving the people, casting farmers into deep poverty, etc. H. ‘primarily a book about the purposes of God and the realization of his will for the world.’ H. ‘says’: stay true to Yahweh no matter what!

Culture getting in your church – H.= Habakkuk H. is for believers living between the promises of God and fulfillment of those promises. H. tells us proper attitude to evil in the world. “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?” (1:13)

Culture getting in your church – H.= Habakkuk If the church doesn’t influence morality, God may make some evil force do it. Churches being ‘dumbed down’ morally? Does OT judgment meet NT Grace? “Go and sin no more.” “Repent and believe.” God WILL punish moral evil (16), believers must trust God no matter what (17), and “be joyful in God my Savior.” (18)
