WHAT THIS STUDY SHOWS THIS EXERCISE HELPS TO SHOW HOW BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE FACILITATES COMPREHENSION BY ALLOWING US TO CHUNK INFORMATION (TO RELATE IDEAS TO IDEAS) AND TO FREE UP ROOM IN WORKING MEMORY. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE ALSO CLARIFIES DETAILS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE AMBIGUOUS AND CONFUSING.
