This Week In Science How to convert within the metric system. If you move down the stairs, you move the decimal to the right. If you move up the stairs, you move the decimal left. The independent variable is what is changed on purpose, the dependent variable is what changes because of the independent variable. Speed is how fast you are going, while velocity is how fast you are going, but with direction. S = d/t and v=d/t (direction) Acceleration is the rate velocity changes. There are three ways to accelerate: speed up, slow down, change direction. Speed , velocity and acceleration are all ways to describe an object that is in motion. Acceleration is the rate that velocity changes.
