Entry Task Please take out your map packet and get to work on those with your partner(s).

Perspective Look at the image below, what do you see?

Scale: Zooming in and Zooming out of History Modern Revolution (late 1800s) Creation of solar System and Sun (4.5 Billion years ago) The Big Bang (13.7 Billion years ago) Agricultural Revolution (3000-2500 BCE) Life on Earth (4 Billion years ago) Early Humans (~160,000 years ago)

1985

Scale Definition: An arrangement of events used as a measure of the duration of a period of history. There are positives and negatives from taking a super close look at history, say studying 1 day in history for a week; as well as positives & negatives of looking at 100 years in 5 minutes.

“Scale” by David Christian “…to do world history, you have to learn to move through multiple scales…Modern historical scholarship can only be enriched by multiple perspectives…”

Perspective TERRORIST There has been a recent spree of petty theft from a wealthy neighborhood. Victims have reported having their safes tampered with and reported that valuable items such as jewelry and cash have been taken from their homes. Usually these occurrences would not get the attention of law enforcement, but recently local homeless shelters in the same neighborhood have reported large, anonymous donations. Last night, a group came forward to claim they had been the ones responsible for the thefts but claim they have only good intentions. The group advocates for a more equal wealth distribution and with the lack of efficiency from our government has prompted the group to take matters into their own hands.

Perspective Traitor? Defender of Liberty?

Importance of Perspective History is always told from a unique perspective Perspective and bias are inevitable, so it is critical that we understand our own biases and recognize that how they may alter our view of history “History is written by the victors” Are we only getting one side of the story?

A Unique Perspective on David & Goliath Who knows the story of David & Goliath? The quintessential “underdog” story Malcom Gladwell asks us to consider if the story we tell is actually what happened… David vs. Goliath
