11/8 Topic: Citations & Topic Sentences Aim: Can I properly: cite a source and write a proper topic sentence? Do Now: Take a handout Take out your research packet, blank index cards, & something to write with.

Citations two to three per body paragraph (5 to 10 total) statistics, quotes, speeches, specific details from an event, etc . . . Only in the body paragraphs Turn to page 23 in your research packet

Topic Sentences What does a topic sentence tell a reader? Where do topic sentences appear in a paragraph? Look at the Cesar Chavez sample paper (p. 26) Take out one blank index card for every body paragraph that you have.

Organization Check Make sure your cards are organized/sorted properly Your topic sentence for that paragraph should be on top of the pile When you read your cards (body paragraph) it should flow like a story. . . No Gaps If your cards are organized all you are doing is typing your cards. . . .type and flip

Organization Check Make sure your fact cards are in your own words Double check for citable information and make sure you have the author’s name and page numbers on the card

For the Rest of the Period You Can (Look at the Checklist) . . . . Finish Organizing Finish your Topic Sentences Find the author and page numbers for your citations Introduction, Thesis, Conclusion

For the Rest of the Period You are working silently If you need help I will add your name to my list and call you up when it is your turn. While you are waiting you should work on something else. Do not just sit there and do nothing.

Homework Make sure you are ready to type when you come into class Introduction & Thesis & Conclusion & Share Bills/Vikings – Mr. Holzer Mets/Pioneers – Mrs. Mack Cards are sorted & organized into paragraphs Topic Sentence for each paragraph. You have citable information with the author and page #
