Three-Steps Interview COOPERATIVE LEARNING Three-Steps Interview

Three-Steps Interview Three-step interviews can be used as an introductory activity or as a strategy to explore concepts in depth through student roles.

Three-Steps Interview Procedure Students work in pairs.  Individuals interview their partners by asking clarifying questions Student pairs reverse roles, repeating the interview process Each pair then joins another pair to form groups of four.  Students introduce their pair partner and share what the partner had to say about the topic at hand.

Examples questions Can you explain more about that? What do you mean by that? Can you give me an example? Why would that happen? Why do you think that? What might happen next? Generating a list of possible question stems may help students develop questioning skills.

Hint and Management Idea Questioning. Before students try this strategy, they have explore the types of questions reporters ask and at what point in the interview they ask them. Reinforcing the need to ‘take time’. Talk about the issue of taking time to think or deciding whether or not to answer a question during an interview. Using recording sheets. Consider providing students with recording sheets to use when they are in the role of 'Reporter'. Determining the length of time for each interview. Depending on the age of your students and their experience with this cooperative learning strategy, you may have to adjust the length of time for the interviews.

Benefits of Three Steps Interview Three-Step Interview creates simultaneous accountability. Students share and apply different questioning strategies. Over time, students can be introduced to different taxonomies of thinking to extend their ability to use different levels of questioning and thinking.
