Inflation Pressure Markings TYREGTR-18-10 Agenda item 4.1 Inflation Pressure Markings Action Item IWG17/1 Industry proposals

Action item IWG17/1 Industry will further work out a proposal regarding Reference Test Inflation Pressure in relation to the sidewall marking in section 3.3.5 and 3.3.11. (End February 2018)

Background FMVSS 139: “S5.5. Tire Markings. … (c) The maximum permissible inflation pressure, subject to the limitations of S5.5.4 through S5.5.6 of this standard;” “S5.5.6 For LT tires, the maximum permissible inflation pressure shown must be the inflation pressure that corresponds to the maximum load of the tire for the tire size as specified in one of the publications described in S4.1.1.(b) of §571.139. At the manufacturer’s option, the shown inflation pressure may be as much as 10 psi (69 kPa) greater than the inflation pressure corresponding to the specified maximum load.” 19 May 2019

Service and Test Conditions Markings Cases Case A: Service conditions and test conditions are the same Case B: Service conditions and test conditions differ 19 May 2019

Service and Test Conditions Markings Option 1: Marking Case A: “SERVICE AND TEST CONDITIONS: MAX LOAD SINGLE ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD MAX LOAD DUAL ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD“ Marking Case B: “SERVICE CONDITIONS: MAX LOAD SINGLE ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD MAX LOAD DUAL ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD“ “TEST INFLATION PRESSURE: ______ kPa” Rationale : -it is always clear when reading the sidewall what are the RTIP and service conditions -This is needed especially during transitional period, because verification authorities will not understand if the inflation pressure is the same as the service conditions or have to look for a kPa test value. 19 May 2019

Service and Test Conditions Markings Option 2: Proposal and Rationale Case A: “MAX LOAD SINGLE ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD MAX LOAD DUAL ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD“ Case B: “MAX LOAD SINGLE ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD MAX LOAD DUAL ______ kg (_____ lb) AT ____ kPa (_____ PSI) COLD“ “REFERENCE TEST INFLATION PRESSURE: ______ kPa” Rationale : It is consistent with the proposed verbiage in section 2.56 and 3.3.5. Reference test inflation pressure is defined as the minimum cold inflation pressure for the maximum load carrying capacity of the tyre in single application. Adding labels such as ‘SERVICE AND TEST CONDITIONS’ and ‘SERVICE CONDITIONS’ are not needed and potentially could cause confusion with the vehicle placard pressure assigned by the vehicle manufacturer. By adding these labels, it may be misconstrued that it is applicable to ALL SERVICE CONDITIONS, which is not correct. The stamping is self-explanatory…. a Max Load at a specified inflation pressure. Labels are not required for other stamping information, such as: load index, speed symbol, tire size designation, tire identification number, etc. Adding the ‘Reference Test Inflation Pressure’ stamping to the tire is only needed if it is different than the inflation pressure for the Max Load. Adding ‘Reference Test Inflation Pressure’ to all LT/C tyres would be redundant stamping on most tyres because it would be just restamping the same inflation pressure over again. Proposed changes to sections 2.56, 3.3.5, and 3.3.11 on next slide: 19 May 2019

Service and Test Conditions Markings Option 2: Proposed GTR text 2.56 - Reference Test Inflation Pressure applicable for LT/C tyres is the minimum cold inflation pressure for the maximum load carrying capacity of the tyre in single application as defined in standards manuals of the organizations shown in Annex 7. 3.3.5 In the case of LT or C type tyres, the maximum load rating and corresponding inflation pressure of the tyre, shown as follows: Max load single ______ kg (_____ lb) at ____ kPa (_____ psi) cold Max load dual ______ kg (_____ lb) at ____ kPa (_____ psi) cold For LT and C type tyres rated for single fitment only, mark as follows: Max load single ______ kg (_____ lb) at ____ kPa (_____ psi) cold The Reference Test Inflation Pressure shall be marked on the tyre if it differs from the inflation pressure marked for single application above, shown as follows: REFERENCE TEST INFLATION PRESSURE: ______ kPa  3.3.11 Remove.
