NYU Madrid is the oldest of the university’s global sites, established in 1958. Located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid is the capital of Spain and one of Europe’s largest, most vibrant and progressive cities. This guide will provide an overview of the housing options available at the site.

Presentation Overview Housing Overview Homestays Claraval Residence Meals & Kitchen Access Roommates Guest Policy Study Away Confirmation Portal Housing Application Housing Reservation Payments

All students live in NYU-arranged housing which has been vetted by University committee on student safety. There are two housing options at NYU Madrid: Homestays The Claraval Residence

Homestays Homestays are a great way to learn Spanish and to experience Spanish life in meaningful ways. NYU’s host families are carefully screened and accustomed to hosting students, so they are tolerant and receptive to cultural differences. There are no curfews or difficult-to-follow house rules in the homestays. Usually common sense respect is enough. Some families speak English but those that don't make an effort to understand and be understood. Remember: You are a paying guest, but nonetheless a guest. Be courteous and open to a new culture and different food!

All accommodations include a bed, desk, chair, and a closet in the bedroom as well as internet access Bed sheets, pillows, towels, and blankets are provided Washing machines, televisions, refrigerators, and microwaves are standard features Included each week: two loads of wash; cleaning of your room; change of sheets/towel

When considering the homestay option, students often imagine living with a Señora or housemother. While this is still very common, host families can be quite diverse – single parents, couples with children (of all age groups) and older couples with grown children who no longer live at home. Yet they are all alike in their openness and interest in engaging in a unique cultural experience. If placed in a homestay, students can request to live in a single room or a double room with another NYU Madrid student.

Instead you will pay rent directly to the homestay family. Sample rate: Rooms with Laundry and Kitchen Privileges ONLY  €/DAY $/DAY €/TERM $/TERM Single Room 22.50€ $26.55 2,610€ $3,080 Sample rate: Room with Laundry, Continental Breakfast and One Hot Meal   33€ $38.95 3,828€ $4,518 Double Room 30€ $35.40 3,480€ $4,106 Homestays are charged and must be paid in Euros. US dollar amounts are provided for reference only. If you are placed in a homestay, you will not receive a housing charge on your Bursar bill. Instead you will pay rent directly to the homestay family.

No checks or credit cards accepted! Homestay rent payments must be in EUROS directly to your host family. Rent is due during the first 3 days of every month. Upon arrival, you will pay a proportional part of the month. No checks or credit cards accepted!

Residence The Claraval Residence is located in Chamberí, a largely residential neighborhood that is centrally located. NYU residential life members live in the apartment-style residence along with Spanish and other international students who are enrolled in area universities. Living in the residence is a great option for those who want to meet and make friends with local students.

There is also 24-hour security. Each suite includes two single bedrooms, a kitchenette (small stovetop, microwave, fridge), and a bathroom. Rooms are furnished with bed, desk, and chair. Linen, towels, blankets and pillows are provided. There is a weekly cleaning and change of sheets and towels, as well as a small laundry room in the building, and Wifi is available throughout the facility. While the Residence is comprised of Spanish and other international students, NYU Madrid participants will only live with other students in the program. There is also 24-hour security. Sample bedroom layout

This is a very secure facility that will require ID to access the building The residence contains study lounges with computer facilities, and other common rooms that are shared by all of the residents of the building. Absolutely NO smoking, alcohol, drugs or indecent behavior will be tolerated in either the student lounges or the common areas.

Double suites (two single bedrooms with a shared kitchenette and bathroom) - $5,749 Students will be charged in US dollars by semester through the NYU Bursar Office on their NYU E-bill. Scholarships and aid awards in excess of tuition and fees will credit against the cost of housing. Payments are to be made to the University Bursar in the e-suite online payment tool.

Meal Plans There are two homestay meal plan options: the media pensión or kitchen rights. The media pensión option includes “continental” breakfast (ex, coffee/tea with toast, jam, yoghurt) and one hot meal (usually dinner). The kitchen rights option includes access to the kitchen, where you would buy your own food, cook your own meals and clean up afterwards. The availability for the kitchen rights option is limited. If you choose to have kitchen rights over a meal plan, expect less interaction with your host family.

There is no meal plan or dining hall at the Claraval Residence There is no meal plan or dining hall at the Claraval Residence. Students will be expected to prepare their own meals. Each suite has a kitchenette with a small stovetop, microwave, and fridge. Upon arrival, each suite will receive: Two of each – Set of Forks, Knives, and Spoons; Dessert Spoons, Glasses, Plates, Soup bowls, Cereal Bowls, and Coffee Mugs One of each - Pot, Skimmer, Colander and Frying Pan

Guest Policy Homestay Guest Policy Guests are only allowed in the homestay with the approval of the host family. Students should receive the permission of the host family before inviting guests to visit. Claraval Residence Guest Policy Students may have overnight guests. But there is a limit to the duration and frequency of hosting visitors. Students must submit a “Request to Host Form” that can be obtained from the Residence Assistant. Since the rooms only have one bed, the guest will only be allowed to stay overnight if the other student sharing the apartment is a) not spending the night/s in his/her room and b) signs a roommate consent form for the guest to use his/her room for the night. The roommate consent form must be turned in together with the request to host form at least 24 hours prior to the guest arrival for review. Approval is not guaranteed. Approved guests must sign in at the front desk before 10 pm.

Housing Application Apply online via the Study Away Confirmation Portal Housing Application Opens on November 1st and must be completed by November 17th. Assignments are made based on Portal submissions and availability. Be sure to put down 2nd or 3rd choices. If requesting a roommate, make sure you indicate the same housing type (double, for example) Remember, we have few single rooms available and preference will go to students registered with the Moses Center.

Study Away Confirmation Portal You will be able to select from the available housing options: Within each option you will select your bedroom preferences (if applicable) Remember, Housing at our Global Sites differs from Housing in New York – you won’t be able to select the exact bed in the exact room.

Housing Reservation Payment & Deferment As part of the application most students will need to submit a $1,000 reservation payment If you successfully applied to defer your $500 reservation fee (to confirm your spot at NYU Madrid) your Housing Reservation payment will automatically be deferred as well. If you did not defer your reservation fee but need to request a deferment of the $1,000 Housing Reservation payment, please email housing@nyu.edu If you have already successfully deferred your Housing Reservation Payment you should see this tab on your Study Away Confirmation Portal
