The process by which living organisms produce others of their own kind reproduction reproductive system The body organs and structures that make it possible to produce children sperm Male reproductive cells Click to reveal the definitions.

The pair of glands that produce sperm testes The pair of glands that produce sperm A mixture of sperm and fluids that protect sperm and carry them through the tubes of the male reproductive system semen Click to reveal the definitions.

In this lesson, you will learn to describe the functions of the male reproductive system. identify the organs and structures of the male reproductive system. identify common problems of the male reproductive system. explain how to care for the male reproductive system. identify ways for detecting testicular cancer.

Sequencing Take a look at Figure 12.3. Using this figure, trace the path of sperm from where they are produced to outside of the body. Make a list of the structures that sperm pass through.

Because of reproduction, all forms of life continue to exist. reproduction The process by which living organisms product others of their own kind

Reproduction Each human results from the joining of two cells that come from the reproductive system. reproductive system The body organs and structures that make it possible to produce children

Parts of the Male Reproductive System The main job of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm. sperm Male reproductive cells Each sperm can join with a female reproductive cell and make another human being.

Parts of the Male Reproductive System The scrotum keeps the testes at the right temperature to produce sperm. testes The pair of glands that produce sperm Sperm leaves the testes and travels to the urethra.

Parts of the Male Reproductive System Semen is released from the urethra through the penis. semen A mixture of sperm and fluids that protect sperm and carry them through the tubes of the male reproductive system There are three to four million sperm cells in each ejaculation. The body’s release of semen is called ejaculation.

Male Health Problems Most problems of the male reproductive system can be prevented or treated. If not prevented or treated, these problems can lead to pain, injury, the inability to produce children, or even death.

Male Health Problems Problems of the Male Reproductive System Inguinal hernia A part of the intestine may push through a weak spot in to the scrotum or into the area about the inner thighs. This problem can be treated with surgery. Testicular cancer A lump or swelling of the testicles, and pain or tenderness in the testicles, abdomen, or groin, may be signs of testicular cancer. Serious complications can be avoided if detected and treated early. Testicular torsion Sometimes a structure called the spermatic cord becomes twisted around a testicle. Blood flow is cut off to the testicle, causing pain, swelling or tenderness. Immediate treatment is necessary. Prostate cancer This condition is more common in older men. Prostate cancer can be treated through surgery, radiation treatment, or chemotherapy. Sterility Males who produce no sperm are sterile. Sterility can be caused by untreated STDs or exposure to pesticides, lead, or dangerous amounts of radiation, and certain drugs. Some types of sterility can be treated by medications or surgery.

Caring for the Male Reproductive System Do a testicular self-examination every month after a warm shower. Shower or bathe regularly. Wear protective gear, such as an athletic supporter or cup when playing contact sports. Visit a health care provider for regular physical checkups.

What I Learned Vocabulary Define reproduction. Lesson 3 Review Reproduction is the process by which living organisms produce others of their own kind.

Lesson 3 Review What I Learned List What are four problems of the male reproductive system? Any four: inguinal hernia, testicular cancer, prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, sterility

Lesson 3 Review What I Learned Name What are two types of gear that protect the male reproductive system of a male athlete? athletic supporter and cup

Lesson 3 Review What I Learned Explain How do regular visits to the doctor help to prevent male reproductive problems? A doctor can screen for reproductive problems before they become serious.

Lesson 3 Review Thinking Critically Evaluate Why is it important to take care of the male reproductive system? to prevent injury or illness of the reproductive system, which could cause pain, sterility, or even death

Lesson 3 Review Thinking Critically Apply Tim has noticed a swelling in one of his testes. He is uncomfortable discussing this problem with his parents, but it is not going away. What steps should Tim take to prevent a serious problem? What advice would you give him about the importance of monitoring his personal health? Tim should see a doctor about his problem. You might advise Tim that if it is serious, it should be treated, or it is likely to become worse.
